Religious freedom

The importance of religious freedom is emphasized in the preamble of the Universal Declaration and it is guaranteed under Article 18 which states: "Any person has the right to freedom of thought, conscience and religion; this right includes freedom to change religion or belief and freedom to manifest religion or belief, alone or in community with others and in public or private, teaching, practice, worship and observance ".

A UN Declaration on Religious Intolerance described the discrimination as "an affront to human dignity" and insists that it constitutes a denial of the principles of the UN Charter, a violation of' human rights and fundamental freedoms and, of course, is ofcourse a threat to peace and international security. These principles of equality before the law and non-discrimination are of fundamental importance so that they are regarded as principles of international law, urging all civilized nations.

Universal Declaration

The Universal Declaration marked a turning point in the history of human rights, because this is the first time an organized community of nations set out a Declaration on the freedoms and fundamental human rights. She established the fundamental rights and freedoms which all human beings around the world can claim. The content of the Declaration form the foundation of a democratic, multi ethnic and multi religious.

Unlike the treaties on human rights that resulted from the Declaration and which are those of the countries that have ratified, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights is truly universal in scope. It is valid for every human being anywhere in the world, that governments have, or not formally accepted the principles. The Declaration has a moral authority in the world and a growing political force. It is the seed from which fundamental rights were developed at the international level.

Small world so stick together

We live on a small planet. The willingness to grant basic rights to others is the only guarantee of a healthy future. Our nation of 60 million people is surrounded by people Celtic, Latin, Germanic, Slavic, North African and Basque. Three and a half million of our residents are immigrants, more than half coming from countries which are not part of the European Union. Even though most French who practice a religion are part of the Catholic Church, there are 4 million Muslims, 950 000 Protestants, 750 000 Jews, 400 000 Buddhists, 200 000 Orthodox Christians, 250 000 Jehovah's Witnesses, 30 000 Scientists and thousands of smaller religious groups. We are just a few hours by plane from Greece or Russia, where Catholics are a minority, or the former Yugoslavia, where the French are always busy maintaining peace.

Be an International Citizen

It is essential to know your rights, not only from a national perspective, but also an international point of view. A democracy adopts, it is important to know and respect the laws, it protects the rights of all minority groups. The State police are trying to keep people in ignorance of their rights in order to suppress the free exercise of these rights. The purpose of the UN Decade on Education for Human Rights has been announced loudly by the United Nations during their General Assembly in December 1994. The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights urged that people, whatever their level of education and upbringing are informed of their rights and responsibilities according to international treaties on human rights.

The weapon race

At the beginning of the twenty-first century, the attacks committed by terrorist networks could be precursors of a new type of war. They remind us that violence and persecution are still very much present among us.

In 1948, faced with the development of weapons capable of destroying all life on earth and in the hope of preventing further massacres, the world's nations met to formulate and adopt a universal code that would serve as a reference to persons, groups and especially the nations. They called Universal Declaration of Human Rights UN. The article expresses the spirit in which the Universal Declaration was written: "All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood. "
